The Festive Season Without Judgment: Finding Hope with Eating Free

By Alexandra van Essche, Eating Free founder and lead coach

The festive season can feel unbearable for people living with eating disorders or disordered eating. This is not a personal failure. It is not a lack of willpower. And it is certainly not something to be ashamed of.

If you are facing tables overflowing with food during the festive season and feeling trapped by fear, urges, or panic, you are not alone. Many people describe this time of year as tremendously difficult — surrounded by food, expectations, comments, and pressure, while trying to manage an eating disorder that already feels exhausting at the best of times.

At Eating Free, we start from one clear place: we do not judge. We also know that recovery from an eating disorder is possible. Many Eating Free clients have already begun moving towards a life with more freedom around food — sometimes in small, tentative steps, and sometimes in profound ways.

When Food Is Everywhere and Fear Takes Over

During the festive season, food is no longer optional or easily avoidable. Meals are longer. Portions are bigger. Treats are constant. Social events often revolve entirely around eating.

For someone struggling with an eating disorder, this can trigger overwhelming thoughts such as:

  • “What if I lose control and eat everything?”
  • “What if I can’t stop once I start?”
  • “I’ll just eat now because I know I can vomit later.”
  • “I’ll take laxatives — at least that gives me control.”

These thoughts can feel frightening and consuming, leaving you unsure how to cope or what to do next.

At Eating Free, we want you to know something important: these thoughts are not who you are.

Why the Fear of “Losing Control” Makes Sense

When you have lived with restriction, rigid rules, binge–purge cycles, or compensatory behaviours, your nervous system is often in a constant state of high alert. When food suddenly becomes abundant — especially food that feels “forbidden” — the brain can interpret this as a threat.

This is why urges can feel so intense and urgent. It is not greed. It is not weakness. It is the intersection of biology, psychology, and learned coping patterns.

Understanding this matters, because shame keeps eating disorders alive, while compassion opens the door to change.

You Are Not Broken

Many people arrive at Eating Free believing:

  • “This is just how I am.”
  • “I’ve tried everything.”
  • “The festive season will always be a disaster.”

But recovery does not require perfection, strict meal plans, or white-knuckling your way through December and the New Year.

Eating Free coaching is grounded in lived experience and a deep understanding of eating disorders and diabetes. We work with you to gently untangle fear, food, and control — at a pace that feels safe and realistic.

There is hope, even if it does not feel that way right now.

What Eating Free Coaching Offers

Eating Free coaching does not judge behaviours or demand that you “just stop.” Instead, we help you to:

  • Understand why urges and behaviours show up
  • Reduce fear around food, rather than increasing control
  • Build trust with your body again, step by step
  • Learn practical tools for coping with festive meals and social situations
  • Move away from binge–purge cycles without replacing them with new rules
  • Experience food with less anxiety, guilt, and obsession

Most importantly, we meet you where you are — even if you feel stuck, ambivalent, or scared of change.

This Festive Season Can Be Different — Even in Small Ways

A “different” festive season does not mean:

  • Loving food overnight
  • Eating perfectly
  • Never feeling triggered

It might simply mean:

  • One meal with slightly less fear
  • One urge you understand instead of fight
  • One moment where shame loosens its grip
  • One decision rooted in self-care rather than punishment

These small shifts matter. They are often how freedom begins.
