Support for Your Diabetes & Eating Difficulties

If You Live With Diabetes & Battle with Your Eating You Are Not Alone

Living with diabetes can make eating feel complicated, stressful and at times overwhelming.

Diabetes places unique and constant demands on your eating choices, pressures which often make eating difficult, instead of enjoyable.

People living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are vulnerable to developing eating difficulties as well as eating disorders.

If you live with diabetes and you’re struggling with food, eating patterns, your diabetes and/or your body image, please know that it’s not your fault.

Diabetes: Why Eating Can Become Difficult

Diabetes often brings stresses that people without diabetes may not fully understand, including:

    • Food rules: Guidelines about what you can & can’t eat, which can often feel rigid.
    • Constant monitoring: Tracking glucose levels, portions, carbohydrates, insulin and/or oral medications, which can be exhausting
    • Blood sugar fluctuations: Highs or lows that you may not understand, often causing frustration
    • Comments about food: Remarks from people who don’t live with diabetes about what you eat, which can feel judgmental.
    • Diabetes distress or burnout: Feeling worn out or drained from managing your diabetes, which can sometimes impact your eating.

Many people live with diabetes. They experience similar struggles. You are not alone.
